Ahead of the meeting of the working Group for public administration reform in Serbia, the Director for the Western Balkans of the DG NEAR of the European Commission Genoveva Ruiz Calavera said that the main goal was to make the public administration efficient and responsible in providing important services to citizens, adding that the EU will work with Serbia to implement the reform in line with the highest standards.

“I was happy to come to Belgrade with the Commissioner Johannes Hahn once we received sectoral support to the tune of EUR80 million for public administration reform,” Ruiz Calavera said.

The Director said she was impressed with the measures taken and that the Union remains Serbia’s partner on the path towards full-fledged membership.

The Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government of Serbia Ana Brnabic said that the reimbursement of EUR80 million, earmarked for Serbia’s public administration reform, would begin in 2017.

She told the press that the funding could not be released in its entirety in 2017, noting that the budgetary support from the EU was aimed at the implementation of Public Administration Reform Strategy.

As she pointed out, the first phase of the reform was to rationalise public administration, adding that the next step is to reorganise public services.

“The goal is to make the services provided to citizens as efficient as possible and to do so in key sectors – health, education and social protection,” Brnabic said.
