“Every 11 minutes a woman is killed. #NoExcuse UNITE to end violence against women and girls” is the theme of the United Nations (UN) global campaign “Orange the World – 16 days of activism against gender-based violence” which begins on November 25, when we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, and ends on December 10, the International Human Rights Day. Unfortunately, violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent forms of human rights violations around the world. This year we also mark the 25th anniversary of the assassination of the Mirabal sisters, ardent activists and fighters for human rights.

The European Union is joining this year’s campaign with the message Break the Silence. The EU Delegation in Serbia joins the global campaign of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence by promoting empowered women and through cooperation with the broader community against physical, verbal and/or socio-economic violence.

“I invite you to join the global campaign and break the silence together. Only when violence against women is no longer concealed, nor socially tolerated or “culturally” justified/forgiven, will we be able to stop gender-based violence. As long as this continues, we cannot claim to be making real progress towards gender equality. There will be true equality only when we get rid of violence. We all have the power to set an example and to UNITE to end violence against women and girls,” said Plamena Halacheva, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia.

We invite you to follow our social media channels and get involved in this campaign.
