Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Commissioner Johannes Hahn on the elections in Serbia:

“Serbia held elections at national, provincial and local levels on 24 April in a calm atmosphere.

At Serbia’s invitation international electoral observers are monitoring the elections and their assessment and recommendations presented today are an important guidance for Serbia, also in the context of its path to the European Union.

Serbian citizens showed strong support for their country’s strategic objective to join the EU. They entrusted the winning Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and its leader, Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić, with a great responsibility. We look forward to the parliament being constituted in good time.

Serbia has taken major steps on its EU path, with the opening of the first negotiating chapters last year. We are confident that Serbia will build on this progress with renewed commitment to reforms, in particular on rule of law and the economy, and continued engagement in the dialogue with Pristina.

We look forward to working with the new government to consolidate Serbia’s progress towards joining the EU.”
