The European Union has donated over EUR400 million to Serbia for environmental protection through various projects aimed at all subareas – from water protection and supply, through air quality improvement and waste management. Furthermore, the EUR402 million worth of assistance provided since 2000 was aimed at legislation reform and capacity building. The area of environmental protection is covered by the negotiating chapter 27.
Over the same period, Serbia has invested EUR196 million in environmental protection.
Some of the results: thanks to an EU donation, Serbia has set up an automatic air quality measuring system and installed measuring stations around the country; electrostatic precipitators have been installed in thermal power plant in Obrenovac, whereas Kolubara received hazardous substances measuring equipment. Regional landfills have been constructed in Subotica, Pirot, Uzice and Sremska Mitrovica/Sabac, while in several towns around the country water supply systems have been upgraded or built. Most of the donated funds – 41.3 per cent – have been invested in wastewater management.
