Around 51 percent of Serbia`s citizens would vote in favour of Serbia`s accession to the Union. Great number of citizens, 68 percent, believes that the reforms necessary for accession of our country to the EU should be carried out even if they were not condition for membership, but for benefit of citizens themselves.
If referendum with question “Do you support Serbia`s membership in the European Union?” were held tomorrow, 51 percent of Serbia`s citizens would answer “yes”, stated Government of Serbia European Integration Office.
Statement says that the EU membership is supported by one percent of citizens more compared to the previous poll.
Against EU membership would vote 22 percent, 20 percent would not vote, while seven percent do not know what they would answer, this is result of the poll carried out by European Integration Officeduring December 2013.
The poll was carried out according to Eurobarometer standard and 1,038 respondents older than 18 participated in this poll.
Respondents say that EU membership would be a good thing for 44 percent of them, 26 percent of citizens think that it is bad, and 29 percent think that it is neither good nor bad thing.

Most people, even 39 percent, think that the fight against corruption, that affects their everyday life the most, is one of the most significant reforms, statement cites.
Office mentions that, compared to the previous polls, percentage of those who think that Kosovo is set out as the main condition for Serbia to get the date for the start of negotiations, has declined, but 39 percent of citizens still consider this situation the main barrier for further accession of Serbia.
In line with that, even 70 percent of citizens understand the importance of this issue and think that problems between Belgrade and Pristina should definitely be tackled regardless of whether the EU requests that.
As main factors that hinder accession of our country to the EU, citizens mentioned EU policy of constant conditioning 38 percent, inefficiency of domestic leadership 12 percent, as well as mentality of our people and unpreparedness for change 11 percent.
For majority of citizens, 45 percent of them, EU membership still represents the path towards better future of young people, more employment opportunities 42 percent, as well as possibility for fee movement within EU borders 40 percent.
Since 2002, European Integration Office regularly conducts public opinion poll.
