The talks between world powers and Iran about Iran’s nuclear programme are complicated, and there is no guarantee that the talks will succeed, Catherine Ashton says after the discussion in Tehran.
Tehran, March 9th 2014 – EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Catherine Ashton visited Iran this weekend, where she several high-level meetings.
“Interim agreement between world powers and Iran is very important, but not as important as final agreement,” said EU High Representative during the joint press conference with her colleague Mohammad Javad Zarif.
She added that EU is involved in these complicated discussions between Iran and world powers, but that there is “no guarantee” of success with discussions.
“It is important that Iranian people support the work of Foreign Minister and his team, and with the support from International Community we must set the goal of reaching the solution,” Ashton said.
EU High Representative arrived in Tehran on Saturday and today she met the President of Iran Hassan Rouhani.
Iran and P5+1 (USA, France, UK, Russia, China and Germany) reached an interim agreement last November about the Iran nuclear programme.
Among other things, the interim deal proposed curbing the uranium enrichment up to five percent. In exchange, world powers have promised a six-month sanctions relief for Iran.
In February, Catherine Ashton said that the next round of talks will be held in Vienna on March 17th.
