Director General for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy of the European Commission Christian Danielsson told FoNet that his meetings in Belgrade made him certain that Serbia was firmly on the European path.

Serbia is on the right track and we are working together to make further progress in negotiations, but I cannot say how many chapters Serbia is going to open by the end of 2017, Danielsson said.

“The decision is up to Serbia and EU Member States, but we are all working to advance the process,” Danielsson said, adding that the fact Serbia “has in mind” where it is going is a good thing.

He recalled that Serbia was faced with some important outstanding issues on that path, such as the reform of judiciary, fight against corruption, structural economic reform, etc.

“In other words, Serbia needs to continue making progress in all areas it is already working to improve,” Danielsson said.

He said he did not want to predict any dates, adding that the country should focus on its European agenda and unresolved issues ahead.

“When it comes to the pace of negotiations, the merits are what counts, the EU has been clear on that. It can be a marathon, a slow or a more rapid advance, but at any rate, the pace is up to the countries in the negotiation process,” Danielsson told FoNet Agency in an interview.
