Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met this morning with President of Kosovo*, Atifete Jahjaga, to discuss the progress in EU-Kosovo relations during the President’s 5-year mandate which ends later this week. Excellent cooperation with the President contributed to a number of positive steps forward in the EU-Kosovo relations, including the entry into force of the first contractual framework for bilateral relations, the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, on 1 April.
The High Representative and the President also spoke about the current political situation in Kosovo and the importance of functioning institutions. They agreed on the importance of the dialogue for normalisation of relations with Belgrade, in particular the implementation of existing agreements for the benefit of the people. They furthermore talked about the need for strong cooperation between the EU and the wider region in facing common challenges, such as economic development and security situation, including countering radicalisation.
