“The music of the marathon is a powerful melody, one of those songs of glory. It calls us to give up pleasures, to discipline the body, find courage, renew faith, and become ourselves, completely and unconditionally,” said Dr. George Sheehan, physician and author of the book Running & Being.
The 38th Belgrade Marathon, one of the most important sporting events in Serbia, once again gathered thousands of runners from both Serbia and abroad. The discipline and courage Sheehan speaks of is expected from all participants, including the team from the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia, who are promoting the values of unity, solidarity, and sporting spirit through their participation.
In addition to five running teams presented as “Team Europe – Better Together”, the EU Delegation in Serbia continued its tradition of sponsoring the event by collaborating with the Belgrade Marathon on the “Eco Island” initiative.

This initiative aims to involve young participants in interactive activities that promote environmental awareness, solidarity, and healthy lifestyles. Through educational workshops, recycling activities, children’s shows, and interactions with Red Cross volunteers, the initiative focuses on environmental responsibility and the wellbeing of others. Reaching beyond marathon participants to the wider community, “Eco Island” amplifies the message that everyone can contribute to building a healthier and more responsible future.
The European Union has provided significant support for the development of sports in Serbia, with a particular focus on inclusion and accessibility. Over the past two cycles, the EU has supported the Paralympic Committee of Serbia, enabling their participation in international competitions and producing a campaign to promote the Serbian Paralympic team — and through it, EU values.
Additionally, the EU organises the European Week of Sport each year in partnership with the Olympic Committee of Serbia — an initiative that promotes physical activity, healthy living, and sports inclusion among youth.
The EU continues to support the development of sport in Serbia through various initiatives and projects. Through the Erasmus+ program, the EU funds sports organizations, nonprofit events, and research, contributing to the improvement of sports policies and inclusion through physical activity.
The participation of Team Europe in the Belgrade Marathon symbolizes the European Union’s commitment to sports, healthy lifestyles, and inclusion, while also strengthening the ties between Serbia and the EU through shared values and goals.
