Statement by the High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the terrorist attack in Kabul:

My thoughts and the thoughts of the whole European Union are with the people and authorities of Afghanistan after this morning’s terrorist attack in the centre of Kabul. We extend our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the innocent people who have been killed. To the hundreds more who have been injured, we wish a full and quick recovery.

The European Union Delegation in Kabul is fully mobilised and ready to assist those EU Member States’ diplomatic representations and their staff members affected by the explosion.

This attack took place in the holy month of Ramadan, when many in the country are in a period of worship and prayer. We in the European Union share the prayers and the hope of all Afghans that peace can be achieved, and continue to work for it. The European Union continues to support all steps towards peace and reconciliation, as well as the functioning of Afghanistan’s institutions, which are of the utmost importance for stability in the country. The European Union stands by the Afghan authorities and all Afghans, united in fighting this global threat of terrorism.
