The European Commission has taken note of OSCE’s remarks and worries regarding Serbia’s online censorship claims and will continue to closely monitor the situation, Peter Stano, Spokesman of European Enlargement Commissioner Štefan Füle said.

“Freedom of expression and media are key principles to be respected by any country in the enlargement process. Our latest Communication on the Enlargement Strategy of October 2013 put a special emphasis on freedom of expression and the media. To this end, the Commission is regularly organising Speak Up conferences with all partners in the region,” Stano said.

“In line with our mandate, we will continue to closely monitor the situation in close cooperation with all relevant partners in the country, the Serbian government as well as the OSCE, the Ombudsman, the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection.

“We will also continue to follow freedom of expression and media issue through our regular political dialogues with the government, as well as later on through chapter 23 judiciary and fundamental rights and chapter 10 information society and media,” he said.

“In this context, the Commission welcomes the government’s commitment to move forward with the implementation of the media strategy and adopt the expected legislation on public information and the media, on public service broadcasters and on electronic communications,” Stano added.
