The European Commission has been discussing with the Serbian authorities the issue of migration flows through Serbia. Our objective is to support Serbia and other countries in the region to deal with the increased migratory flows.
This includes the provision of funds (through ECHO and the Instrument for pre-accession) that can be made available at short notice to address the most urgent humanitarian needs as well as medium- and long term support to improve infrastructure (e.g. reception capacities) inside the country to cope with the increased number of migrants.
The European Union support will be based on a needs assessment which the Serbian government is currently developing.
The EU support however does not include any plans to develop any kind of mass centres for migrants either in Serbia or any other country in the region.
