At the beginning, the EU was created as a project of peace and stability for the European continent. These aims have in time convinced more and more countries to join the 6 founding members. Now, the EU counts 28 Member States and its doors are open to other European countries that wish to join, and are committed to fostering peace, democracy, stability and prosperity.
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland (negotiations with Iceland have been put on hold following the decision of the Icelandic government), Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey are currently in the enlargement process.
