EU and UNDP have donated specialised ballistic examination equipment worth more than EUR 50,000 to National Criminal-technical Centre of Serbian Criminal Police Department. The donation was delivered in the presence of Head of EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport and Permanent Representative of UNDP Irena Vojačkova-Sollorano.

Ambassador Davenport said that donation was part of international campaign aimed at fighting illicit small arms and light weapons (SALW) and said he was confident that the expertise, equipment and resources would contribute to more successful protection of citizens and fight against crime.

Irena Vojačkova-Sollorano said that the use of SALW needed to be diminished and that it was necessary to implement measures to increase registration and cut the usage of firearms threatening society and positive development of the country.

Upon receiving the donation Minister of Interior Nebojsa Stefanovic said that his Ministry placed fight against organised crime and most severe criminal offences high on its agenda and that in this context “forensics may answer many questions.”

“We have shown that criminals cannot hide from the law, not even using sophisticated technologies,” said Minister, whereas Chief of National Criminalistic-technical Centre Lazar Nesic said that the donation was pivotal in order to enhance security.

The donation of specialised equipment for ballistic examination was granted through project “EU Support of SEESAC Disarmament and Arms Control Activities in South East Europe”, implemented by UNDP South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC). Donation includes IT hardware equipment for ballistic laboratory, upgrade of software for the system of ballistic identification, tools for ballistic workshop, desks and specialised equipment for weapons handling, mini laboratory for ballistic activities and operations that include working with chemicals, monitoring and ballistic laboratory access system.
