Water is a vital shared resource that is passed down from generation to generation – a resources that is essential for people, for the environment and for a just, sustainable and resilient economy. Citizens across the continent are facing an increase in natural disasters, such as droughts and floods, which have exacerbated the EU’s water challenges and brought new awareness to the need for water resource resilience.
The 2024 EU Green Week in Serbia is organised in the first week of June (June 5-12) with the aim of aligning with the 2024 EU Green Week theme focused on water resilience and it will focus on the fight for better quality and cleaner water. This edition seeks to raise awareness, encourage dialogue and promote solutions to challenges such as water scarcity, pollution and ecosystem degradation. The EU Green Week celebration is a testament to the overall EU support to the sector in Serbia and its cooperation with national and local institutions to that end, in the spirit of the Team Europe.
The European Union supports Serbia to achieve its own goals related to environmental protection and climate action in order to gradually bring them closer to the level of EU standards, while improving the awareness of citizens, the private sector and the media. The EU operates in the spirit of Team Europe with EU member states present in Serbia, with international organisations, with civil society organisations, and with private companies, encouraging innovation. The commitment of Serbia to the consistent achievement of EU goals in the field of climate and environmental protection is essential for the country’s integration path and will help Serbia to use resources more efficiently.
The transition to clean, circular economy and taking action to stop climate change, while recovering biodiversity loss and reducing pollution, will support people in their efforts to have access to clean air, clean water, improve the economy and create new jobs.
