The European Film Festival was officially launched at the Kupina Cinema in Nis with the screening of a Danish film “25th Hour“ directed by Søren Kragh-Jacobsen. The Festival was officially opened by H.E. Morten Skovgaard Hansen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark in Belgrade. He reminded that this year “Serbia and Denmark are celebrating 100 years of diplomatic relations” adding that the two countries “have so much in common.” The guests were also welcomed by Richard Maša of the EU Delegation to Serbia who said that the European Film Festival was among the numerous activities organised in May, the Month of Europe. “Under the slogan Europe Open, we are offering the citizens of Serbia many social and cultural events to, among other things, bring them closer to the process of accession” Maša said.

This year’s programme consists of contemporary films from Denmark, Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Greece, France, Croatia, Italy, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Sweden, Slovakia, Cyprus and Germany. “Over the course of next six days, our fellow citizens will have a chance to see the diversity, creativity and originality of the European cinema,“ said Snezana Andric of the EU Info Point Nis at the opening. Film programme director of the Cultural Centre of Nis and a film expert Dejan Dabic said he was “extremely happy that the European Film Festival is being launched by a Danish film as films from that country are known to win some of the most prestigious international film awards.“

The Festival runs through 16 May. Apart from the last day of the Festival, when the films will be screened at the Kupina Cinema, the audiences are invited to watch the films free of charge at the Cultural Centre in Nis.

The European Film Festival in Nis is organised jointly by the EU Info Centre, the EU Info Point Nis, Media i reform centar, the Cultural Centre of Nis, the Kupina Cinema and the French Institute in Nis, supported by the EU Delegation to Serbia.

In May and June, the European Film Festival will visit a total of five cities across Serbia.
