Within the pan-European project Europeana, action “Mobilisation of Memory” is organised in three cities – Belgrade, Novi Sad, Cacak – in December, aimed at collecting archive documents on World War I. As early as 5 and 6 December, Belgraders are invited to share their family memories of the Great War.

“Mobilisation of Memory” is a Europeana project, aiming to build a European archive on World War I, through which citizens are invited to participate by contributing their family memories of the period.

Days of memory collection are organised across Europe: Serbia is among the participants whose citizens are invited to tell their stories and preserve them for future generations via collected items.

Citizens may bring letters, photographs and other items pertaining to the period of World War I so that experts could digitise them on spot and incorporate them into the European memory archive. The action envisages the possibility of recording and digitalising  oral testimonies – family stories – as well.

Library of the City of Belgrade, a partner in the project, invited citizens to come and take part in “Mobilisation of Memory” on Friday, 5 December, from 10:00-18:00 and on Saturday, 6 December, from 10:00-15:00.

In Cacak, “Mobilisation of Memory” takes place on 12 December in the city library “Vladislav Petkovic Dis”, whereas in Novi Sad, once again at the city library, on 22 and 23 December.

Europeana is multi-lingual internet portal serving as an interface of European cultural and scientific heritage. As of November 2008, when launched at the initiative of European Commission, millions of photos, movies, museum artefacts and archive footage have been successfully digitised and made available to everyone.

Several Serbian institutions take part in the Europeana projects – National Library of Serbia, University Library “Svetozar Markovic”, Library of the City of Belgrade, Museum of Applied Arts and Yugoslav Film Archive.
