The Head of the EU Delegation in Belgrade, Ambassador Michael Davenport, expressed concern about recent comments from a state official encouraging violence against citizens on account of their convictions, underlining that such comments are not acceptable in any democratic society.
He welcomed initial condemnation from the authorities, stressing the importance of following this up through the appropriate administrative and legal channels.
Ambassador Davenport also expressed concern about the creation and publication of so-called “black lists” brandishing individuals as anti-Serb as well as about threats directed at NGOs and human rights defenders.
He pointed to the responsibility of the authorities both for fostering an atmosphere in society enabling all citizens to express their views freely and for taking appropriate steps against organisations or individuals seeking to intimidate citizens in this way.
