The EU Info Centre held a discussion between the participants of European Debate School and the Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, Ambassador Michael Davenport.

26 high school students hailing from Cacak, Novi Sad, Velika Plana, Smederevska Palanka, Valjevo, Sremska Mitrovica, Indjija and Belgrade had the opportunity to talk to Ambassador Davenport about the future of Serbia’s European integration process, the best possible date of Serbia’s accession, the potential impact of the presidential election on the pace of accession and the ways in which Serbia could contribute to Europe.

Ambassador reiterated that Serbia was eligible to join the EU once it has met all accession criteria and added that Union’s mission was to encourage countries in the region to move towards EU integration. He said that the pace of accession would be influenced by the progress made in areas such as agriculture and environmental protection, which account for the largest portion of EU legislation.

Students were also curious about the developments in the region, above all in Macedonia, as well as the causes and consequences of the UK referendum on leaving the EU.

During the discussion, which was held in a cozy atmosphere, Davenport talked to students in Serbian and ended the meeting by taking a photo with them.
