Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport has offered support to Serbia’s LGBTI community and its efforts to hold 2014 Pride Week and the Pride Parade, saying he will personally take part in the Pride Week.

In a letter to organisers of Belgrade Pride Week, Davenport said “the EU Delegation, as has been the case in the past, will continue to offer its support to the principle that it is a universal right, including for the LGBTI community, to exercise freedom of assembly in a peaceful way. This right should of course be secured in accordance with the Serbian Constitution, as confirmed by the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Serbia on previous bans of the parade.”

“I fully understand the significance of the event which you are planning, especially for the visibility of the LGBTI community in Serbia and I confirm that I will personally take part in the 2014 Pride Week,” Davenport said.
