The Presidency of the Council of the EU convened an emergency meeting of ministers on Tuesday 22 September, while Germany called for the holding of a full European summit.

On Tuesday, the Frontex agency published new figures showing that 156,000 immigrants arrived in the EU in August, and more than 500,000 since the start of the year.

The highest figures have been recorded in Greece, with 88,000 arriving in August. The refugees moved on in the direction of Hungary, which has recorded 155,000 new arrivals since 1 January 2015, according to Frontex. Italy recorded 13,000 arrivals in August, half the number that arrived in July.
