Following threats sent to the Gay Straight Alliance, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport and US Ambassador Michael Kirby visited the GSA and talked to its activists. Ambassador Davenport condemned “the truly horrifying death threats” sent to GSA, and expressed the EU Delegation’s support to this organisation.

The two ambassadors strongly condemned brutal death threats sent recently to the GSA members, urging the authorities to swiftly investigate the case, identify the perpetrators and explore the motives behind.

“We consider such a behaviour as utterly unacceptable in any democratic society and believe that the authorities will address this issue appropriately,” said Ambassador Davenport.

„The GSA told us they had contacted the police and the prosecutor’s office, and we want to remind about the extreme importance of investigating into the background of these threats,” he added.

Davenport welcomed EU Integration Minister Branko Ružić’s condemnation of threats, describing it as a very positive act.

Ambassador Kirby expressed the US Embassy and Government’s support to GSA,  condemning the death threats.

„We have spoken with the activists about everything that happened. Human rights of LGBT people are among the fundamental human rights, and we will continue to support their defenders,” Ambassador Kirby insisted.

GSA President Lazar Pavlović said the visit was an expression of support by the EU and US Ambassadors, as well as their concern for the GSA members’ safety at the time when the group has received death threats for the first time.
