Nearly 500 school children from Nis, Pirot and Aleksinac have taken part in a sports day at the Fortress of Nis. The event takes place from 23-30 September across Europe, in 32 countries, and is joined in by some 10 million youngsters. The crowd was greeted by the Head of Operations II of the EU Delegation to Serbia Steffen Hudolin who told the children to be active in sports and in life. “I am happy to attend this wonderful event – in this magnificent location, the Fortress of Nis – in which Serbia is taking part for the first time,” Hudolin said.
In Serbia, the European Week of Sport is organised by the Serbian School Sport Federation and the Olympic Committee of Serbia under the auspices of the EU Delegation to Serbia.
In 2018, sports days are organised in principal cultural and historic sites as this year was designated as the European Year of Cultural Heritage, said Jovan Jovanovic of the Serbian School Sport Federation said. “There are no losers today, you are all winners,” Jovanovic said as he addressed the gathered children.
Before the official event took place, the youngsters took a tour of the Fortress, accompanied by a tour guide, and learned more about the rich history of the site. The students of the Zoran Djindjic elementary then put on a performance called “The Good Always Triumphs”.
“Investing in sports means investing in youth and future, the two things we all hold dearest,” said the Secretary of the Secretariat for Youth and Sports of the City of Nis Sasa Sargic.
The goal of the event is to promote healthy lifestyles so the youngsters were not asked to be better than others, but to be the best they can, said organisers.
