In Nis, Europe Day was marked by organising Balkanska Street of European Values event. The event was organised by the City of Nis, EU Info Point Nis, Coalition of Youth Initiatives Nis, Media Centre, Kupina film and civil society organisations.

Ramunas Janusauskas of the EU Delegation to Serbia, Milan Pesic representative of the City of Nis, Marjan Cvetkovic of the Coalition of Youth Initiatives Nis, Atanas Krstin Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Nis and Milan Stefanovic of EU Info Point Nis addressed the attendees at the opening ceremony.

 

The opening ceremony was followed by a rich programme of activities:

European Civil Society Festival

In Balkanska Street, civil society organisations and institutions have offered their promotional and EU materials on more than 30 stands. The European Values Fair has run from 11:00 to 15:00 and aroused great interest with citizens.

Hate Fighters dance programme – Stop Hate Speech

Stop Hate Speech was performed by volunteers of KOM 018. This year, the same song and choreography is being performed in seven European countries: Serbia, BiH, FYR Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland and Denmark.

 

Rock concert

Rock concert, which ran from 12:30 to 15:00, was held right after the opening ceremony, with performances from Jam Station (Nis) and CRUSH (Sofia, Bulgaria). The performance of Bulgarian band was organised under the auspices of Consulate of the Republic of Bulgaria in Nis.

Quiz “What I Know about Europe” for elementary school pupils

During the rock concert in Balkanska Street, Kupina cinema held a quiz about Europe for elementary school pupils from Nis. 12 elementary schools from Nis, in three semi finals and the finals, took part in the contest: Dr Zoran Djindjic, Ratko Vukicevic, Kole Rasic, Car Konstantin, Sveti Sava, Sreten Mladenovic Mika, Duško Radovic, Ivo Andric, Njegos, Radoje Domanovic, Ivan Goran Kovacic, Branko Miljkovic. In a thrilling finale, pupils from Sveti Sava elementary have demonstrated the highest level of knowledge about the EU and won the first prize in the contest. Awards were presented to finalists by representative of EU Delegation to Serbia Ramunas Janusauskas.

Debate – Youth on Europe

At the Deli space, located in Balkanska Street as well, representative of the EU Delegation Ramunas Janusauskas held a debate aimed at young people and answered their questions about the EU. The debate was attended by some 40 youngsters who showed their interest by asking numerous questions and made the debate last two instead of initially intended half an hour. Janusauskas has patiently answered the questions, whereas the youth have shown a high level of knowledge about the process of EU integration.

Organisers of Balkanska Street of European Values have scheduled a meeting at the same location next year.
