Serbia is taking another step toward a healthier and more sustainable future through new investments that will improve access to medical care and expand sanitation infrastructure.

The projects will upgrade clinical centres in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Niš, while also providing modern sewage infrastructure for residents of Belgrade’s Palilula municipality, for around 86,000 residents.

New agreements signed today in Belgrade will enable the modernization and equipping of hospitals of strategic national importance, backed by a €157 million loan from the European Investment Bank and a €35.5 million EU grant through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF).

“Clean water, healthy communities, and a greener future — this project brings much-needed infrastructure to a community that currently lacks a sewer network and wastewater treatment. It’s a win for Belgrade and for the Sava and Danube rivers”, said Plamena Halacheva, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia.

“These investments will improve access to healthcare and enhance the wellbeing of Serbian citizens. The result will be more efficient medical services and a cleaner environment”, said Robert de Groot, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank.

Minister of Finance Siniša Mali highlighted that strengthening and modernizing healthcare institutions remains a government priority, noting that the newly signed agreements mark the beginning of the second phase of major investments in Serbia’s clinical centres.

Minister for European Integration Nemanja Starović underlined that these projects represent a tangible step in Serbia’s European path, contributing to the adoption of EU standards and improving the quality of life for citizens.

Over the past 15 years, the European Union has invested more than €580 million in Serbia’s environmental protection. This is a clear demonstration of the enduring partnership and commitment to supporting Serbia’s green transition as part of its EU accession.
