From 5 until 8 October, Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Crețu is in Greece. She meets with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Giorgos Stathakis, Minister of Economy, and with Ministers in charge of EU funds.
Following her meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Commissioner Crețu said: “It was a pleasure for me to meet with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras again; I assured him that the Commission will stand side by side with the Greek people, as it has done through many years. We share the same goals of a lasting recovery and of a prompt return on the path of growth and jobs in the country. To make the best use of EU funds, Greece will continue to benefit from tailor-made technical support. This is the work of the Commission’s Structural Reform Support Service, coordinated by Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis on behalf of President Juncker. We also discussed the urgency of the refugee crisis and the ways to deal with it, together. Greece is facing an unprecedented migratory pressure at its borders. The Commission is offering almost €450 million to support Greece in dealing with its migration and security challenges and we are ready to offer more through emergency funding. But responsibility and solidarity must go hand in hand. We expect Greece to quickly put in place an effective relocation mechanism as well as return system, while improving the absorption of EU funds and address the reception capacity needs arising from the increased migratory flows.”
