The European Commission has approved today the addition of two new product names to the registers of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) and Protected Designations of Origin (PDO).
From Germany, ‘Aachener Puttes’ (PGI) – or ‘Oecher Puttes’ in dialect, also protected – is a blood sausage from Aachen with a spicy taste which is sold fresh, tinned or smoked. Around the start of the industrialisation period 200 years ago, Aachener Puttes became popular because it provided factory workers and coal miners with a high-protein and high-calorie diet. Since then, the traditional recipes and production methods have been passed down from generation to generation.
From Croatia, ‘Krčko Maslinovo Ulje’ (PDO) is an extra virgin olive oil, the production of which takes place exclusively on the island of Krk and the smaller islets which are under its administration. Because the rockiness of Krk island precludes the use of agricultural machinery, nearly all tasks are performed by hand.
