Danube in books – a true European journey is the slogan under which the EU Delegation to Serbia and the EU Info Centre take part in this year’s International Belgrade Book Fair kicking off on Sunday, 23 October.

The EU Delegation takes part in the Book Fair the fifth consecutive year. This year’s central theme is the Danube: the river connecting 14 European countries and offering journey through European culture and history.

From Germany, where it originates, through Central European states and all the way to candidate countries such as Serbia, the Danube today symbolizes also a European integration path.

Belgrade International Book Fair offers a chance to showcase EU socio-economic support to the regions along the river in Serbia as well as authors hailing from Danube region countries who have written about the Danube.

From 23-30 October, our stand located at the Hall 4 of Belgrade Fair will host the presentation of books and publications, debates, exhibits and promotions of successful EU projects in Serbia. Each of the seven days will be thematically devoted to a certain “Danube” topic.

Monday 24 October will mark “Start of a Danube Journey”. Following the opening ceremony, a round table will take place titled “Danube-Ocean in The Heart of Europe“ participated in by writers Aleksandar Gatalica, Vasa Pavkovic and Nenad Novak Stefanovic.

Tuesday is titled “Danube – Opportunity for Development” and includes the presentation of successful EU projects in Serbia. The day kicks off with a presentation of project of reconstruction of Golubac Fortress and ends with a screening of the film “The Danube in Serbia – 588 Impressions”.

The next day, several panels will be dedicated to “15 years of EU-Serbia partnership”. “For a stronger voice of citizens: EU support for Serbian civil society” and “Could culture in Serbia do without Europe” are the topics which will bring together eminent participants.

Thursday is titled “Book – A Ticket for a World of Magic”. Author Jasminka Petrovic will present her books to school children, the presentation of Europa Diary will also be held, we will talk about myths about the EU and the chances for new beginnings offered by Erasmus+.

On Friday we will present “EU Publications”, including “EU and Serbia – Growing Together”.

Saturday is reserved for “Libraries as New Meeting Places”. Our guest on Saturday will be Tanja Stupar-Trifunović the 2016 laureate of the prestigious European Literature Award for her book “Clocks in my mother’s room”.

On Sunday, we are Closing the Fair but Danube Journey Continues in Books. This is the day to hang out and socialise with our partners and visitors. Throughout the Fair, an interactive quiz will be organised. Also, an EU projects map will be presented and on display, whereas the visitors to the stand will have two laptops at their disposal to browse through EU Bookshop and Europeana web-sites.
