The European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, started his visit to Serbia with a meeting with the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
After the meeting, Commissioner Varhelyi said that he hopes that Serbia will become part of the EU in the next enlargement.
“I hope to see that in the next European Commission Serbia will join the EU. On the 20th anniversary of the biggest enlargement of the EU, it is clear what the EU membership brought to Central and Eastern Europe. Now we are creating the momentum so that the next Commission can make decisions and results about the enlargement”, said Varhelyi.
Varhelyi also said that the EU is proud of the transformation of the member countries and their societies.
“So, now we are making all the tools, preparing the momentum so that the next Commission can bring results when it comes to enlargement. We have started the implementation of that plan, it is one of the topics I discussed with the President of Serbia, Vučić. I hope that you will be able to see the first results in Serbia soon”, noted the Commissioner.
