Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport toured the construction of water supply line in Veliko Gradiste and the reconstruction of Golubac Fortress on the Danube, two projects funded by the EU from pre-accession funds with EUR11 million.

Having visited the Fortress, which he called “jewel of the Danube”, Davenport said the project in which the EU has invested EUR7 million will see the construction of a visitors centre, a bicycle track and a promenade as well.

Serbia does not have an access to the sea, but it has the Danube and will have the reconstructed Golubac Fortress, Davenport said, stressing that this will help Serbia to better position itself on the European tourist map.

Once the reconstruction of Fortress and construction of the new road and tunnel are done in 2016, it is expected that Podunavlje experiences tourism boost.

Davenport, Minister of Trade and Tourism Rasim Ljajic, Austrian Ambassador Johannes Eigner and their host, Mayor of Golubac Zoran Pajkic, toured the reconstruction site and, symbolising peace, released several doves.

Ambassador Davenport had earlier attended the beginning of construction works of the water supply line in Veliko Gradiste, a project financed by the EU with EUR4 million.

Supply of drinking water will enhance living conditions in the Municipality of Veliko Gradiste and stimulate further investments in tourism in this part of Serbia, Davenport said.

The water soon to flow out of the new facility will meet Serbian as well as the standards of the EU, he said.
