The construction of social housing building located in 5 Djackog bataljona street and a satellite unit of elementary school “Drazevac” in the neighbourhood Poljane kicked off thanks to EU funding provided through EU Assistance for Flood Relief in Serbia Programme.
32-apartment building is aimed at families affected by May 2014 floods. Construction is due for completion by the end of May 2016 and is being carried out on a lot provided by the City of Belgrade. The Municipality of Obrenovac, at the same time beneficiary and manager of the building, will choose among eligible families. European Union has allocated some EUR780,000 for the construction and equipping of the facility.
European Union also funds the construction and furnishing of a satellite unit of “Drazevac” elementary school in Poljane with EUR130,000. Due to heavy rain in May 2014, water levels reached one metre, severely damaging the floors, walls, joinery, facade and electrical installations. This new facility of 225 square metres of floor space should be completed in January 2016. The school will comprise three class rooms, teachers’ assembly hall, storage room and toilets. Also, it will have access for persons with disabilities.
The EU’s Programme of Support to Flood Relief in Serbia, worth 30 million EUR, is financed by the European Union from IPA pre-accession funds. The money is allocated for the construction of new homes, reconstruction of state institutions, private houses, roads and revitalisation of economy and agriculture in 24 municipalities most affected by floods: Bajina Basta, Valjevo, Varvarin, Velika Plana, Jagodina, Kosjeric, Koceljeva, Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Krupanj, Lazarevac, Loznica, Ljubovija, Mali Zvornik, Obrenovac, Osecina, Paracin, Svilajnac, Smederevska Palanka, Trstenik, Ub, Cacak, Sabac and Sid. All activities on the ground are carried out by the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), organisations HELP and ASB, as well as Danish Refugee Council (DRC) – in coordination with Government’s Office for Assistance and Reconstruction of Flooded Areas.P
