The EU welcomes the institute of independent Enforcement Agents and supports its further strengthening, with the aim of reducing the backlog of cases and rendering the Serbian Judiciary more efficient, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport said at the European Legal Policy Forum.

Davenport said that Serbia has taken an important step towards an independent, impartial, competent, accontable and efficient judiciary with the adoption of the National Judicial Reform Strategy one year ago.

Now the actions need to be seen, showing that the strategy is implemented according to plan, and we are looking forward to seeing the first annual report on the implementation of the strategy,  he said.

Serbia’s ability to timely deliver on the implementation of the national judicial reform and to start enforcing clear measures conducive to a more predictable and sustainable judicial and business environment will provide clear indications on its ability to proceed forward on its path to accession, Davenport said.

In that respect, the fifth pillar of the National Judicial Reform Strategy is explicitly focussing on the efficiency of the Judiciary, and the action plan lists an entire set of activities to be implemented to strengthen the system of independent Enforcement Agents, he added.

The EU Delegation has provided project support to Serbia with the value of EUR 1,8million since September 2013 to implement a number of activities in this area.
