One of the final events in the Women Power in Comics – WomCom project, which is dedicated to promoting the visibility and representation of female artists in the world of comics, was held on December 20th at the Students’ Cultural Centre (SKC) in Novi Sad.

In addition to the exhibition and presentation of the results of two years of work with an emphasis on the WomCom digital platform and WomCom printed edition which includes the comics created during the artistic residencies were combined, the audience was also presented with the research “Gender in contemporary comics: the representation of gender roles in European author comics published in Serbia between 2021 and 2023”. The research was done by the Centre for Women’s Studies, in cooperation with partner organizations KomunikArt, Stripotetke and MiniBookvica.

The intention of the research was also to show that the contemporary comic, as a specific visual-narrative form that has developed a critical edge towards society, has the potential to break the established understandings related to gender and gender roles, and it was created as part of the project Fem.Com(ics): representation of gender roles in contemporary author comics in Serbia, supported by the Government of Switzerland through the program Culture for Democracy, implemented by the Heartefact Foundation.

The Women Power in Comics – WomCom was co-financed by the European Commission, through the Creative Europe program, and the presentation of the project’s results was organized this month in Podgorica, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Budapest, Athens and Novi Sad.
