Trnavica, Ljudska and Banjska river dams that were constructed in the framework of EUR400,000 worth project, mostly funded by the EU, have saved citizens of Novi Pazar from floods and flood-related accidents.

The main reason Novi Pazar managed to stay out of the group of cities affected by floods is the construction of anti erosion dams that were built at the end of last year in the framework of EU PROGRES project, said one of the members of emergency management Nihad Hasanović.

“A week ago, form boards were removed and dams were handed over to use. Following were the large rainfall events and if it weren’t for these dams, Novi Pazar would be in great danger just like many other Serbian cities,” Hasanović said.

This time, newly built dams prevented the water from damaging households and causing more material damage.

The EU PROGRES project comprises variety of anti erosion and flood control measures of the Raška river basin. Only in 2013, floods caused material damage estimated at EUR1 million in Novi Pazar.
