On the occasion of the ceremonial signing of the Agreement on the handover of software to the Energy Agency of the Republic of Serbia (AERS), the successful completion of the EU-funded project ‘Support to the Energy Agency of the Republic of Serbia for Energy Market and Network Infrastructure Data Collection and Analysis’ has been officially marked. The newly developed information system not only strengthens the internal operations of Serbia’s Energy Agency but also offers valuable external services for stakeholders, along with a public portal for accessible data.

“The European Union is proud to support Serbia’s regulatory capacity in the energy sector, which is essential for a stable, fair, and efficient energy system and market. Today’s delivery of advanced software to the Energy Agency marks a significant step in strengthening this critical sector with new tools for effective data collection and analysis. Integration of Serbia’s energy market into the EU’s single energy market remains a key priority in the EU accession process, and the EU will continue supporting Serbia as it addresses decarbonization, renewable energy, and consumer protection. The EU and Serbia are joining forces to address shared challenges as Europeans, for the benefit of all our citizens”, said Nicola Bertolini, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Serbia.

This project, financed by the EU, has significantly enhanced AERS’s institutional capacities and contributed to more efficient management of the energy sector, aligning it with European standards and bringing Serbia closer to its EU integration goals.

“The European Union has recognized the importance of strengthening the Energy Agency’s capacities and has provided a grant of nearly one million euros, equipping AERS with a significant tool for more efficient management of energy resources, marking an essential step towards the sector’s digitalization,” said Dubravka Đedović Handanović Minister of Mining and Energy. She added, “The Ministry of Mining and Energy is also digitalizing the processes under its management, such as conducting auctions for renewable energy market premiums, which are fully digitalized and aligned with EU standards.”

Dejan Popović, President of the Energy Agency of the Republic of Serbia, stated that this system will enhance AERS’s operational efficiency.

“We now have an internal application for our employees, an external one for all energy entities, and a public portal for citizens to easily access essential information. We are grateful to the European Union, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Mining and Energy for recognizing the importance of this project, as AERS could not have funded it alone,” he said.

In the past, the EU has funded several technical assistance projects, supply contract and even the operational grant for the establishment of the agency in 2004 amounting more than 10 million euros. Looking ahead, the EU is committed to continue supporting the energy regulator and Serbia on its EU accession path, including large scale green projects like development of new wind park in Kostolac (EUR 32 million), rehabilitation of the existing hydropower plants (EUR 37 million) and investments in energy efficiency.

The European Union is the leading donor in the field of energy in Serbia, where it has invested over one billion euros in grants since 2000. In Serbia, the EU provides funding for projects aimed at security of supply, diversification of energy sources, market liberalization and improvement of energy efficiency.
