EU donation worth EUR30 million – aimed at improving infrastructure in 27 faculties within five public universities across Serbia – supported Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia.

Through High Education Teaching Infrastructure Project (EU HETIP), the EU had financed reconstruction of laboratories, research cabinets, study rooms and communal facilities in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Nis, Kraljevo, Novi Pazar, Bor, Vrnjacka Banja, Cacak and Leskovac.

The project also provided standard teaching equipment, as well as specific scientific and modern ICT equipment to 27 institutions of higher education. Modern, multi-purpose teaching equipment will substantially improve practical skill and competencies of Serbian students and help the Ministry to enhance scientific and technical innovation and research, all of which will in turn contribute to economic prosperity.

Project EU HETIP has been officially closed in the premises of the University of Belgrade (Kapetan Misino zdanje) for which the EU had allocated EUR1 million for roof and facade reconstruction, renovation of joinery and installation of panoramic elevator in order to make movement of PWDs easier. Kapetan Misino zdanje, which is home to Rectorate of the University of Belgrade, celebrated 150th anniversary in February 2013.

In Nis, in the framework of EU HETIP, European Union allocated EUR800,000 for Medical School, where a laboratory for functional genomics and proteomics has been equipped with sophisticated, digital equipment to be used by scientists and researchers. Additional funds have been used for the reconstruction of University Library Nikola Tesla and JUNIC Information Centre.

Through EU HETIP, Faculty of Occupational Safety in Nis has received funds for the reconstruction and adaptation of cellar premises and library as well as scientific equipment for graduate and PhD studies.

Total funds for the reconstruction of faculties in Nis amount to over EUR300.000, whereas the equipment is worth EUR1 million.

Students and teaching staff of Serbian universities have benefited from project results as of 2013. The EU has helped Serbia to enhance university potential so that higher education institutions would play a central role in the process of increasing employment and creating wealth. Since 2000, the EU has donated EUR63 million to education sector in Serbia.
