Within the newest activities under the Programme “EU Assistance to Migrants and Refugees in Serbia”, accommodation capacities of Reception center in Presevo were enlarged with additional 300 beds. Thanks to bed sets’ donation from the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia, the Authorities from Commissariat for refugees and migrants and Serbian police are provided with necessary support in overcoming migration crisis and preparation for new challenges on border with FYR Macedonia.
Due to continuing Illegal crossings of migrants from FYR Macedonia and Bulgaria, Republic of Serbia is still in need of support in handling the refugee crisis. Slobodan Savovic, deputy head of reception center in Presevo, states that number of migrants has increased in past few days and that yesterday number of people in the center was 152.
“Situation is better than it was a year ago, when we had up to 8000 people in the center daily. Nevertheless, Serbia is still in need of support in raising the number of accommodating facilities, and thanks to this donation from the EU Delegation, in Presevo we are now capable of accommodating up to 1100 migrants. Of course, out of humane reasons, we hope that capacity will never be fully accommodated”.
He also added that Serbia is in need of support from donators, so it can efficiently do the job of registration and guidance of the people who pass through Serbia’s territory, with providing basic services – accommodation, food, clothes, hygiene, medical services for the duration of the stay of migrants in transit and reception centers.
“Cooperation with its partners is crucial for the Commissariat, and of special importance is the support of European Union which recognizes the needs on the field”, said Savovic at the end.
