Every year, from 16 – 22 September, the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK, founded and sponsored by the European Commission. This event aims to favour non-motorised modes of transportation in cities over automobile traffic that uses fossil fuels, all with the aim of improving the quality of the environment in urban areas. The campaign has been implemented since 2002, and last year almost 3,000 cities from 50 countries in Europe and the world celebrated this event.

For municipalities and cities, EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK provides an excellent opportunity to present sustainable transport alternatives to their residents and to explain to them the environmental challenges they face. By participating in the action, cities and municipalities can show citizens the advantages of choosing cleaner types of traffic and thereby improve the traffic situation in their local environment.

Local governments are strongly encouraged to use this week to test new traffic measures while getting feedback from the public. It is also a great opportunity for local stakeholders to come together and discuss different aspects of mobility and air quality, to look for innovative solutions to reduce car use, to try out new technological and planning solutions. The campaign gives citizens the opportunity to explore new possibilities for using city streets and to experiment with practical solutions that contribute to solving important issues for cities, such as air pollution.

THEME OF THE 2023 CAMPAIGN

The European Commission has decided that the theme of this year’s EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK will be: SAVE ENERGY. The motto Let’s move better – save energy! was chosen for this theme. The theme of this year’s campaign is focused on the possibilities of saving fuel and energy in general, through the motivation of citizens to use active forms of movement, the promotion of renewable forms of energy in mobility and the advocacy of as little dependence on the use of cars as possible.

We invited municipalities, cities and urban municipalities from Serbia to join this year’s EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK. To participate, please register on the official website.

Starting from February 16, 2020, the coordination of the implementation of the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK in the Republic of Serbia was taken over by the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities – Association of Towns and Municipalities of Serbia and the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, which contributes to an even more massive celebration of the even in our local governments with a strong support of all relevant actors from the national level.

The Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities is the sponsor of the Car Free Day in Cities and Municipalities. On World Car-Free Day, September 22, the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities invites mayors, presidents of municipalities and local leaders to come to work on foot, by bicycle or by public transport and in this way, by personal example, inspire citizens to initiate changes in behaviour and movement for better quality of the environment.
