Delegation of the European Union to Serbia and EU Info Centre have marked this year’s Europe Day with a series of events in Obrenovac, Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis.

EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Han also expressed his support to Serbia’s further EU integration. Following a series of meetings with top Serbian officials, Commissioner Han visited Obrenovac where he opened the sport contest for pupils coming from elementary schools damaged by last year’s floods, whose reconstruction was financed by the EU. Europe Day was marked in downtown Belgrade as well. On that occasion, Secretary General of European Movement in Srbija Maja Bobic said that majority of young people in Serbia believed that EU membership would bring better education and more economic opportunities, whereas Communication Officer of the EU Delegation to Serbia Nadezda Dramicanin stressed that marking of Europe Day was an opportunity to speak openly with Serbian citizens about EU youth, entrepreneur and agricultural programmes, as well as other benefits of EU membership.

 

“It is very important to let citizens know that, even though they are not EU citizens yet, they may already take part in the debate and create the EU they want,” she said and invited citizens to look up for information about events organised within Europe Open campaign across Serbia on web-site euinfo.rs.

 

In Nis, Europe Day was marked with event Balkanska Street of European Values organised by the City of Nis, EU Info Point Nis, Coalition of Youth Initiatives Nis, Media Centre, Kupina film and civil society organisations. The event has been traditionally held in Balkanska Street for the second time.

Ramunas Janusauskas of the EU Delegation to Serbia, Milan Pesic representative of the City of Nis, Marjan Cvetkovic of the Coalition of Youth Initiatives Nis, Atanas Krstin Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Nis and Milan Stefanovic of EU Info Point Nis addressed the attendees at the opening ceremony.

 

The opening ceremony was followed by a rich programme of activities: European Civil Society Festival, Hate Fighters dance programme – Stop Hate Speech, rock concert, quiz “What I Know about Europe” for elementary school pupils, while youngsters debated about the EU. Read more here.

In Novi Sad, Europe Day was a convenient moment to open EU Info Point, which will from now on provide the latest relevant information on European Union, its policies and developments, as well as the process of Serbian European integration to citizens of Novi Sad and Vojvodina. In Belgrade, on the occasion of Europe Day, Institute of International Politics and Economics, with the support of EU Info Centre, organised exhibition entitled “European integration in books”. Read more about the event here.

Obrenovac was the hot spot of this year’s Europe Day celebration, the city hit by 2014 catastrophic floods and reconstructed thanks to EU donations, among others. On 9 May, winners of sport contests were announced, whereas in the city centre, on Zoran Djindjic Square, performances and concerts took place, citizens were talked to, knowledge was tested, and the celebration ended with a rock concert attended by a large number of citizens.
